The recent loss of Alexander Wang (Balenciaga) and Marc Jacobs (Louis Vuitton) from the classic Parisian houses leaves a lot of designers wondering what is next for “the house?”

The Parisian House’s are famous for having coined the term “fashion house” because, let’s face it, no one can put a high price tag on anything quite like the French can. Many people ask me what a “ fashion house” is, and while I wish it was 4 walls built out of silk blouses, palazzo pants and tulle skirts with a roof of alligator skins, it is actually just the industry terminology for a company that specializes in the design and sale of high fashion clothing and accessories.

The aforementioned departure of MJ and A. Wang has taught designers like myself is simple- that no matter where you get your experience, your brain only has so much creative juice, that at some point you will need to make a choice. I say work for a brand that will likely win each season due to its heritage, or build something for yourself.
More and more, I think the brands that will endure in this industry have already figured out how to captivate an audience through inclusivity as opposed to exclusivity. Emerging names are getting people to shop – and love their purchases-through community identity as opposed to branding.

I encourage you to Think about this: Can you distinguish Opening Ceremony like you can Louis Vuitton? Proenza Schouler like Michael Kors? No, you simply cannot. They simply don’t brand the way these huge houses do. The “it” brands in fashion are building a new type of fashion house- One where “the house” is implied and the love of concept, design and execution will reign. MJ and A. Wang have taken note, that it’s best to build their own home, rather than to compete in the future. And while LVMH is the ruler of luxury due to its monopoly, it is becoming less clued in on where the fashion heartbeat is getting it’s blood from: It’s designers! As designers, we think of ruling people’s hearts and captivating their imaginations. We build that look from our minds to help the people achieve the image they want without knowing even knowing they are doing it.

We, the stylists, aren’t marketers, or public relations people.  We just want to build you (yes you!) your favorite bag. (Not the bag that was marketed to you the best, the one that SPOKE to you).

Fashion evolves, but the artists who love making your favorite items are hopeless romantics who want to help you build your personal style through creating your favorite things to wear. So take note from Marc and Alexander.  Build your own classics. Believe in your own style, and try new brands.
